PACE Braille Production FAQs

Q - Does PACE offer a service to produce Braille materials?
A - Yes.

Q - What type of material can be Brailled by PACE?
A - Simple projects converting print to Braille. This could include personal letters, pamphlets and brochures, and other materials you would like to change from print to Braille.

PACE staff and volunteers are not expert Braille transcribers, however, so we cannot transcribe mathematics, musical notation, or materials with charts and graphics. We may refer you on to a professional organization for some types of projects.

Q - How do I get my material translated (transcribed) into Braille?
A - If you can provide your material to be Brailled in an electronic format, such as a Word document, we can do a direct computer translation. If you have hand written or typed material, we will need to use a volunteer to enter your material into a computer.

Q - How long does it take to get my Braille done?
A - Plan for two weeks. If your job is complicated, or requires volunteers to type into a computer, additional time may be required. We can give you a time estimate when we look at your specific project.

Q - What if I need my Braille faster than two weeks?
A - We can refer you to a number of non-profit organizations in Illinois that produce Braille full time and usually much quicker.

Q - What is the cost of this service at PACE, Inc.?
A - For profit businesses will be charged 50 cents per Braille page.
Non-profit organizations will be charged 25 cents per Braille page.
PACE, Inc. consumers may request this service at no charge.

Because a print page translates into about three Braille pages, some finished jobs become quite bulky. You may wish us to bind your Braille with a plastic binding comb. There will be a 25-cent charge per plastic comb.

If your job is quite complicated and will require an extraordinary amount of staff time or volunteer supervision, we may ask for a "set up" fee. To avoid a "set up" fee, you may wish to re-type your material into a computer yourself. We can offer you guidelines on how to do this in a braille-friendly way.

Q - How do I contact PACE for more information or to submit a Braille request?
A - Please call the Coordinator of Visual Impairment Services at PACE, Inc.
(217) 344-5433 (voice), (217) 344-5024 (TTY).
